International Youth Day 2019 Held Around the Asia Pacific Region

12 August was first designated International Youth Day (IYD) by the UN General Assembly in 1999, and serves as an annual celebration of the role of young women and men as essential partners in change, and an opportunity to raise awareness of challenges and problems facing the world’s youth.

This year of 2019, with the theme of “Transforming Education”, the United Nations field offices around the Asia Pacific region held celebration events to embrace the importance of youth engagements. Highlighting the Bangkok (Thailand) Regional Hub, the whole celebration was facilitated by a group of Thammasat University students, which attracted over a thousand youth applicants and a hundred of them were selected. Talks by guest speaker and panels were organized, together with interactive discussion workshops and marketplace where youths can receive information from different UN agencies and youth organizations.

Other countries around the region, including Myanmar, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Afghanistan, etc., had also celebrated the IYD by organizing different events, workshops, and performances, emphasizing the education development strategies in the countries, meanwhile raising up youth voices.
